TRAGEDY IN POGRADEC/ Criminal proceedings launched against three doctors following the death of a 37-year-old pregnant woman

Following the death of 37-year-old pregnant woman Marjana Karolina Bunaj, who was seven months pregnant, police have initiated criminal proceedings against three doctors at the Pogradec Maternity Hospital.

The tragic incident occurred on the evening of August 30, 2026, when Marjana Karolina Bunaj arrived at the Pogradec Maternity Hospital in poor health.

After being examined by the three maternity hospital doctors, the 37-year-old woman was transported by ambulance to Tirana to receive more specialized medical care.

However, her condition deteriorated on the way, and the ambulance was diverted to the maternity ward of Elbasan Hospital.

Despite medical intervention, doctors at the hospital determined that the woman had died.

Following the incident, officers from the Pogradec Police Station’s Crime Investigation Unit referred the case materials to the Prosecutor’s Office, which initiated criminal proceedings against the three doctors who had examined the 36-year-old woman.

Pogradec – Specialists for the Investigation of Crimes at the Pogradec Police Commissariat referred the case materials to the Prosecutor’s Office, where criminal proceedings were initiated against: B. D., 35, resident of Elbasan; A. T., 40; and S. Ç., 34, both residents of Pogradec, all working as doctors at the Pogradec Maternity Hospital.

On the evening of August 30, 2026, M. K., 36, seven months pregnant, arrived at the Pogradec Maternity Hospital in poor health.

After being examined by the three doctors, the 36-year-old woman was transported by ambulance to a maternity hospital in Tirana for specialized medical care. However, as her condition deteriorated during the journey, she was taken to the maternity ward of Elbasan Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The procedural materials were referred to the Korçë Prosecutor’s Office for further action, on suspicion of the criminal offense of “Negligence in Medical Treatment.”
