A tragic incident occurred today in Italy, where an 81-year-old man traveling in an electric wheelchair died after being struck by Inter goalkeeper Josep Martinez. The Spaniard was on his way to training when the accident happened.
According to local witnesses, the elderly man initially moved in a reserved lane but then veered left onto the main road, colliding with Martinez’s vehicle, which had the right of way. A woman following behind also witnessed the incident.
Witnesses report that the man’s electric wheelchair had begun showing signs of malfunction before entering the road, and it is not ruled out that he may have suffered a heart attack or lost control of the wheelchair.
Local authorities are continuing investigations to clarify all circumstances of the accident, while Italian media have widely reported the news. The case also raises concerns about the safety of mobility devices for elderly individuals.
