Turkey–Bektashi tensions: A new diplomatic clash in Tirana, with Baba Mondi and the “Bektashi state” at the center

Media reports and analyses point to rising tensions between Turkey and recent developments surrounding the Bektashi community in Albania, particularly following the idea of establishing a “Bektashi state,” previously proposed in public discourse by Prime Minister Edi Rama.
According to these reports, Ankara considers this idea a “red line” in bilateral relations, viewing it as an undesirable precedent for the institutional organization of Islamic communities in the region.
In this context, attention has also been drawn to a visit by the Turkish ambassador in Tirana to a Bektashi community in Elbasan, where he held a courtesy meeting and extended greetings to believers on the occasion of the month of Muharram and the Day of Ashura. This meeting has been interpreted by some media outlets as a departure from traditional protocols of institutional communication with the World Bektashi Headquarters.
Against the backdrop of this situation, various analysts link this development to a possible cooling of relations between Ankara and the leaders of the World Bektashi Headquarters, led by Baba Mondi, as well as to Turkey’s broader relations with religious institutions in Albania.
Historically, the Bektashi issue carries a particular political and cultural weight, dating back to the relocation of the headquarters of the Bektashi Order to Albania in 1925, following the ban of the order in Turkey by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.
Meanwhile, recent developments have brought renewed attention to the debate over the relationship between the state, diplomacy, and religious communities in Albania, as well as the role of external actors in these dynamics.
In the absence of direct official statements confirming open clashes, the situation remains widely interpreted by media and analysts as a sensitive diplomatic development with potential implications for regional relations.
