A shocking case of child abuse has come to light in eastern France, where a 9-year-old boy was rescued after being locked inside a van by his father for more than a year.

According to The Sun newspaper, the child was found on Monday in an extremely poor condition, as he is believed to have been confined in the vehicle since late 2024, when he was just seven years old. Authorities say the boy was unable to walk due to being kept in such confinement for a long time and showed clear signs of malnutrition and neglect.

Police officers who rushed to the scene after neighbors reported hearing “child-like sounds” coming from the parked van described horrifying images. The child was found naked, curled up in a fetal position under a blanket, lying on a pile of garbage and next to human excrement.

He told officers he was not allowed to leave the vehicle even to use the toilet, forcing him to urinate in bottles and defecate in garbage bags. He also said the last time he had bathed was in 2024.

According to police, security cameras recorded the 43-year-old father visiting the van twice a day, throwing items inside, believed to be food and water. The child said he was fed twice a day, and for a short period last summer he was allowed to return to the family apartment when the rest of the family was on vacation.

According to the report, the father claimed he was forced to take this action because his 37-year-old partner did not want the child to stay in the house and had asked him to send the boy to a psychiatric institution.

He claimed he chose to keep him in the vehicle to “protect” him and avoid institutionalization, while telling acquaintances that the child had already been placed in a facility.

Prosecutors noted that the child had performed very well in school before his disappearance and that there was no medical evidence indicating psychiatric issues.

The 43-year-old was arrested and charged with unlawful detention, kidnapping, and deprivation of liberty of a minor, as well as deprivation of food and care. The family’s two other children, girls aged 10 and 12, were placed under the protection of authorities.

His partner is accused of failing to report the abuse and neglect of a minor under the age of 15, as she admitted hearing noises from the van but believed the child had been sent to a psychiatric hospital.
