A youth football match in Naples, between the Don Guanella U-14 boys team, a club run by Don Aniello Manganiello, known for his anti-Kamorra efforts, and the Naples U-17 girls team, ended in a major scandal due to sexist insults and offensive behavior toward the female players.

The incidents began on the field with inappropriate jokes and continued on social media, where some young players posted comments and content with offensive and discriminatory language aimed at the girls.

In an open letter published on Facebook, the girls’ football club denounced a series of “sexist and unacceptable” behaviors that “have nothing to do with sport or fair competition.”

According to the club, the underage players faced degrading comments, offensive insinuations, and harassment even through private messages after the match. “This is not a joke, this is not football. It is a social wound,” the statement read.

The match itself was tense and ended 4–2 in favor of the boys’ team. However, what happened afterward caused much greater outrage: several Don Guanella players posted photos and videos on social media accompanied by sexist and offensive slogans, prompting immediate reactions from the girls’ club and from Don Manganiello himself.

The case has also drawn the attention of Deputy Francesco Emilio Borrelli, who described the behavior as “unacceptable sexism” and a sign of the “moral decline” among some youth.

“I am deeply angry and disappointed,” said Don Manganiello, who has long used football as a tool for education and to steer young people away from crime in peripheral areas. He stressed that the behavior of some players “undermines the good work done over the years” and promised immediate disciplinary measures.

“Some of our players seriously erred. There will be serious sanctions, and we will start special courses on respect for women and against vulgar language,” he added.

Following the public denunciation, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) is expected to consider opening a disciplinary procedure. Both the institutions and the girls’ club hope that this episode will serve as an example in the fight against insults and discrimination in youth sports.
