Delta Force, officially known as the 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta, is one of the most elite and secretive units of the United States Army. This unit is considered the pinnacle of U.S. special operations and is used only in missions involving extremely high risk.

Basic information

Delta Force was established in 1977 and is based at Fort Bragg, now known as Fort Liberty, in North Carolina. It is part of the U.S. Army and operates under a very limited and highly restricted chain of command.

Main duties

The missions of Delta Force include counterterrorism operations, hostage rescue, covert special operations, the capture or neutralization of high-value targets, as well as the protection of very important individuals in extreme situations.

Selection and training

Only highly trained and experienced soldiers from other elite units such as the Rangers and Green Berets are accepted into this unit. The selection process is extremely demanding and tests candidates’ physical, psychological, and mental abilities. Training includes close-quarters combat, precision shooting, urban operations, covert infiltrations, and counterterrorism tactics. Only a very small number of candidates manage to successfully complete this process.

Secrecy and structure

The exact number of Delta Force members is not public. They often operate without uniforms and without identifying insignia, and many of their missions remain classified and are never made public.
