A confidential security dossier published by international media has revealed the dark side of the latest World Cup, held in Mexico, the United States and Canada, where Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo were reportedly among the targets of serious threats.
According to the British tabloid “The Sun”, citing documents published by “Informacion.es”, US authorities recorded dozens of alerts during the tournament, including gun threats, claims of bombs at stadiums and attempts to approach football stars. Argentina captain Lionel Messi was one of the main targets. Before two of Argentina’s matches, police received reports of armed individuals and threats of explosive attacks at stadiums, prompting the deployment of bomb disposal units and strict security checks
Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo was also mentioned in security reports after an individual requested information about his whereabouts, while a fan managed to enter the hotel where the Portuguese star was staying and attempted to approach him in the elevator. He was immediately stopped by police.
The pressure also extended to referees. French referee François Letexier received more than 6,000 threatening messages following an Argentina match, while other FIFA officials and footballers became targets of threats and hate campaigns on social media.
According to reports, the World Cup was accompanied by a massive security operation, with extraordinary measures implemented to protect players, fans and officials. The documents show that, behind the spectacle on the pitch, authorities faced a high number of threats, making this one of the most heavily secured editions in World Cup history.
