23,000 lekë per kilogram for plums, economics expert: The Competition Authority should intervene in the market

Rising prices of products in the Albanian market continue to worry consumers, while certain cases are sparking strong public debate.

One of these is the price of green plums, which this season has reached up to 22,000–23,000 old lek per kilogram, a level considered unjustifiable.

Economics expert Romina Radonshiqi, invited on A2 CNN, described the situation as concerning and called for institutional intervention. She said the price is abusive and urged the Competition Authority to investigate the market.

“The issue of plum prices surprised me as well since it is a domestic product. The Competition Authority itself should investigate the market. The price is unjustifiable even considering our wage levels,” she emphasized.

“I believe consumers will not buy plums, as they are not a necessary product for consumption. But Albanian consumers, even for essential products, will not buy them at these prices,” the expert said.

“The Albanian consumer will reduce their purchasing level, which will lead to poorer nutrition,” Radonshiqi concluded.
