The Kosovo Food and Veterinary Agency has announced that 2,900 kilograms of preserved cucumbers have been destroyed. According to the information made public, residues of the pesticide Chlorpyrifos were discovered in processed cucumbers in Mamushë that were intended for export to Slovenia.
A concerning case for food safety has recently been uncovered in Kosovo. Authorities have destroyed nearly 3,000 kilograms of preserved cucumbers after finding residues of the banned pesticide Chlorpyrifos in them.
The products had been processed in the municipality of Mamushë and were prepared for export to Slovenia. According to the official announcement from the Kosovo Food and Veterinary Agency (KFVA), the notification about the contamination came through the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF), a mechanism that connects EU member states and partner countries regarding cases of food contamination.
“KFVA received the notification regarding the discovery of Chlorpyrifos residue in cucumbers processed in Mamushë and exported to Slovenia. Upon receiving this information, immediate measures were taken to protect consumer health, including identifying, blocking, and destroying the affected product,” the Agency’s statement reads.
Investigations found that lot no. 090827, consisting of 2,934.70 kilograms of cut and preserved cucumbers, had been prepared for export but was stopped and destroyed in the presence of KFVA officials.
“Following the actions taken based on the RASFF notification, it was determined that lot no. 090827, in the amount of 2,934.70 kg of cut and preserved cucumbers, had been prepared for export to Slovenia and, as such, was destroyed in the presence of KFVA officials and the relevant party, in accordance with applicable legislation.”
KFVA also clarified that no part of this product ended up on the domestic market in Kosovo, ensuring that timely measures were taken to prevent any risk to consumers. Chlorpyrifos, which has been banned in many European countries, including the European Union, is known for its harmful effects on the nervous system and its potential health risks if consumed in high quantities.
