The recent debate surrounding “VIP escorts” and the privileges granted to crime bosses in Albanian prisons has brought to light a shocking incident that occurred years ago in the women’s prison.

Former prison director Xhoi Jakaj has, for the first time, publicly shared the reason why conjugal visits were permanently banned at the women’s facility.

“There were conjugal visits for women too. But a tragedy happened. During an extended visit, a husband killed his wife inside the special room because there was a fan with a long cord. Normally, the cord is secured after use, but that day it wasn’t. After that incident, we immediately banned all such visits,” Jakaj stated.

According to her, the event deeply shook the entire institution and led to the permanent removal of this right for female inmates. However, Jakaj added that with the transfer of female prisoners to the Pogradec facility, where conditions are better, special visits might have been reinstated though she did not confirm this officially.

Her statement comes amid growing public concern over alleged preferential treatment of certain inmates, especially following a highly publicized visit to Drenova Prison that raised suspicions of abuse involving “special rooms.”
