Five German climbers lost their lives in the Italian Alps following an avalanche while ascending Cima Vertana in the Ortler massif, South Tyrol. The victims were part of a seven-person group, including a 17-year-old girl.
According to alpine rescue teams, the avalanche struck on Saturday, burying three climbers from the first group. Their bodies were recovered shortly after the accident, while the bodies of a father and his daughter were located on Sunday morning.
Two climbers from the second group survived and raised the alarm, enabling an immediate search-and-rescue operation. The tragedy occurred at an altitude of around 3,200 meters, shortly before 4:00 p.m.
Specialized mountain rescue teams, firefighters, and two helicopters were deployed at the scene, but their efforts could not prevent the heavy loss of life. Authorities reported that investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances of the accident and to assess safety conditions in the area, known for its difficult terrain and avalanche risk.
