The head of the National Emergency, Skënder Brataj, stated on his YouTube channel that this year an increased number of flu cases is expected.
He noted that Australia is experiencing one of the worst flu seasons of the last decade, with a significant rise in cases (+70%) and hospitalizations (+50%), while emergency services are operating at double capacity.
Regarding what is expected in Albania and Europe, Brataj explained that the circulating viruses in the Southern Hemisphere—A H1N1 and B Victoria—are anticipated to cause higher flu activity than last year. Therefore, vaccination is crucial.
Brataj’s full statement:
“A short but very important message about what to expect this coming autumn-winter. We usually rely on the Southern Hemisphere, where it is currently winter, and flu infection numbers are much higher compared to last year. In Australia, new cases have risen by over 70%, hospitalizations by over 50%, and prehospital emergency and ambulance use has nearly doubled.
For Albania and Europe, two flu subtypes are circulating in the Southern Hemisphere: AH1N1 and B Victoria. The most at-risk groups are the elderly, pregnant women, children, and people with underlying health conditions.
What should we do? Vaccination with the flu vaccine is essential as it greatly reduces the risk of infection. Considering these figures from the Southern Hemisphere, this year the flu intensity in Albania and Europe is expected to be much higher than last year. Therefore, vaccination is necessary.”
