The winter season also increases viral infections in children, while doctors advise parents on how to act when symptoms appear and when it is necessary to visit the hospital emergency room.

Pediatrician Dr. Albert Lama shared some practical advice for parents on how to handle these cases.

“Currently, in the winter season, the most common problems are viral infections affecting mainly the respiratory tract, with symptoms such as cough and fever. In some cases, children may also experience difficulty breathing or more severe conditions that require hospitalization. When children have a fever over 39°C, these cases require temporary hospital assistance in the emergency room or depending on their condition,” Lama said.

According to him, a child presenting a serious health problem should receive timely emergency care as soon as possible.

Dr. Lama advises parents to consult a doctor and not give antibiotics to children without a prescription.

“Treatment without a doctor’s consultation should not be started. At home, without a doctor’s advice, parents can only give paracetamol or ibuprofen for fevers above 38°C, and then take the child to a doctor. Starting treatment without a prescription is not considered professional medical practice,” Lama said.

Doctors also recommend that the best way to prevent the flu is to maintain good personal hygiene and avoid crowded places. For children with weak immunity or other health conditions, the flu vaccine is essential.
