Dangerous disease hits herds: First case of small ruminant plague in Albania

The National Authority for Veterinary and Plant Protection announces the confirmation of the first case of Small Ruminant Plague in Albania.
According to official data, the first signs of the disease were observed in goats and rams, where characteristic symptoms were detected. After laboratory analyses, the case was confirmed positive.
The Authority emphasizes that immediate measures have been taken to isolate the outbreak, control its spread, and notify local veterinary structures. Teams have also been deployed on the ground to monitor the situation and advise farmers.
Small Ruminant Plague is a contagious disease mainly affecting goats and sheep, causing significant economic losses. The disease is not transmissible to humans but requires swift intervention to prevent its spread to other herds.
The Authority calls on all livestock farmers to exercise increased caution and to report any suspected cases immediately to local veterinarians or the relevant offices.
