The Albanian Parliament enters a decisive week today.

The newly elected Speaker, Niko Peleshi, has called the leaders of the parliamentary groups to begin discussions on the distribution of committees, the Parliamentary Bureau, and other key bodies.

This process will determine the names for the chairmanships and memberships of the parliamentary committees, the Council of Rules and Mandates, as well as the composition of the Parliamentary Bureau.

The development follows Friday’s swearing-in session of the new MPs, during which the new Speaker of Parliament was elected.

In the new legislature, 138 deputies took the oath, while two mandates were vacated by Tom Doshi and Sabina Jorgo, which were transferred to Osman Tata and Bledar Mezini.

The opposition has described the committee distribution process as decisive for the balance of power in Parliament, warning that it will take a strong stance to prevent the majority from capturing institutions.

Later in the week, the “Rama 4” government is expected to face a confidence vote in Parliament, in a tense political climate.
