The number of couples facing difficulties in conceiving and bringing children into the world is on the rise a phenomenon not limited to Albania but also present in many other countries around the globe. Gynecologists identify a range of factors influencing this situation, from the older age at which couples choose to have children for the first time, to health issues that may develop over the course of life.

An increasingly important factor receiving attention is the couple’s lifestyle. Unhealthy nutrition, along with the use of tobacco, alcohol, and drugs by either partner, are elements that negatively impact the ability to conceive a pregnancy.

According to Dr. Eliona Demaliaj from the University Obstetric-Gynecological Hospital “Queen Geraldine,” “1 in 6 couples face difficulties conceiving a pregnancy.” This problem is often intertwined with stigma and misunderstandings in our society. A common misconception is that delays in pregnancy are solely attributed to the woman, although data show that 30% of infertility cases are due to the male partner and an equal percentage to the female partner.

Moreover, many couples face infertility without a clear cause, which makes the situation even more challenging and requires specialized medical and psychological intervention.

In this context, raising public awareness about the factors that affect fertility and adopting a healthy lifestyle are essential in supporting couples who want to start a family. Likewise, emotional support and removing stigmatization can make a real difference in coping with these difficulties.
