On World Mental Health Day, specialist doctors in Korçë sounded the alarm over a serious deterioration in the population’s psychological well-being. According to data from the city’s mental health care center, every day between 10 and 15 people seek help a significant increase compared to previous years.
What worries health professionals the most is the decreasing average age of individuals seeking assistance. Adolescents and young people now make up a large proportion of patients dealing with emotional disorders, anxiety, depression, or inappropriate behavior, often beginning in childhood.
Doctors note that economic and social factors play a major role in this worsening situation. Poverty, unemployment, lack of prospects, parental emigration, and family separations, along with excessive use of technology and social media, have become new sources of stress, anxiety, and isolation.
On this international awareness day, doctors are calling for early intervention, broader public education on the importance of mental health, and strengthening of psychological support systems within communities.
“Mental health is just as important as physical health. A person seeking psychological help is not weak, but courageous. Timely treatment saves lives,” emphasizes one of the specialist doctors at the Korçë center.
