An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.6 was felt in Naples and the Campi Flegrei area at 12:47 PM. The tremor, with its epicenter in the Bacoli area, was clearly felt even in the city of Naples. Many people rushed out into the streets.
According to Italian media, the 4.6 magnitude is the strongest recorded in the Phlegraean area in the last 40 years, matching the quake that occurred on the night of March 13. The earthquake was registered at a depth of 5 km.
The 12:47 PM tremor was followed by another, with a magnitude of 2.2, at 12:51 PM. Meanwhile, the Municipality of Pozzuoli has published an announcement on its social media channels, informing citizens about the seismic events concentrated in the Gulf of Bacoli. The tremors may have been accompanied by a rumbling sound heard by residents near the epicenter.
At this time, there are no reports of damage. The Prefecture of Naples has announced that a press conference will be held shortly.
Train services in central Naples have been suspended as a precautionary measure. The protocol that requires the suspension of railway traffic in the event of seismic tremors exceeding magnitude 4.0 has been applied. However, train departures from Rome heading south are operating regularly.
Inspections are underway on the railway network to allow the resumption of traffic. Line 2 of the Naples metro, which serves the section between Bagnoli and Pozzuoli, has also been stopped. Local trains on the Cumana and Circumflegrea railway lines have also been halted.
