Curaçao made history by earning its first-ever point in a World Cup match against Ecuador. The team from a country with just 156,000 inhabitants drew 0–0, and the man of the match was Eloy Room.
The Curaçao goalkeeper was an impenetrable wall for Ecuador’s players, making 15 saves, the second-best goalkeeper performance in World Cup history after Tim Howard’s display.
Born in 1989, Room is a Dutch-born goalkeeper who later became a naturalized Curaçao citizen and currently plays for Miami FC in the USL Championship, the second division of football in the United States. He began his professional career in the Netherlands with Vitesse, where he played for several seasons before moving to PSV Eindhoven, where he made 3 appearances. He later had spells with Columbus Crew (MLS), returned to Vitesse, played for Cercle Brugge in Belgium, and is now with Miami FC.
Although he previously represented the Netherlands at youth level, Room chose to represent Curaçao internationally, the country of origin of his father.
