An Iranian closure of the Strait of Hormuz “would be extremely dangerous,” warned the EU’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, reiterating that “the European Union is calling for a diplomatic solution and de-escalation.”

At the meeting in Brussels, European foreign ministers focused on finding a “diplomatic solution” following the US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites.

“The fear of retaliation and escalation of war is significant, especially the potential closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran, which would be extremely dangerous and beneficial to no one,” Kallas emphasized to the press.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has called on China to prevent Iran from closing the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical maritime shipping routes.

Any disruption to oil supplies would have profound consequences for the global economy. China, in particular, is the world’s largest buyer of Iranian oil and maintains a close relationship with Tehran.

Oil prices surged following the US attack on Iranian nuclear sites, with Brent crude reaching its highest level in five months.

“I urge the Chinese government in Beijing to call them about this because they are heavily dependent on the Strait of Hormuz for their oil,” Marco Rubio said in an interview with Fox News.

Around 20% of the world’s oil passes through the Strait of Hormuz, with major oil and gas producers in the Middle East using the waterway to transport energy from the region.
