An infant in the United Kingdom has died from whooping cough, marking the first death from the disease in 2025. According to reports, the baby fell ill and passed away between March and June, with health authorities noting that the mother had not received the whooping cough vaccine during pregnancy.

Whooping cough, also known as pertussis, is a highly contagious disease that affects the lungs and airways. Infants are the most vulnerable group, and for them the consequences can be fatal. The incident comes just weeks after another child died from measles at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool.

UK health authorities are raising the alarm over the worrying decline in vaccination rates, which have fallen to their lowest levels in 15 years. Data shows that nearly one in five children starting school this year in England is not fully vaccinated against diseases such as whooping cough, polio, and tetanus.

Only 83.7% of five-year-olds have received both doses of the MMR vaccine (measles, mumps, rubella), while coverage with the four-in-one booster, which includes polio, whooping cough, tetanus, and diphtheria, currently stands at 81.4%.

To strengthen children’s protection, UK authorities have announced that starting next year, routine vaccination of all infants against chickenpox will begin. The new MMRV vaccine will combine protection against measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella.
