Global markets are facing another wave of uncertainty, as aviation fuel prices remain volatile due to geopolitical tensions, refining constraints, and high seasonal demand.

However, against this backdrop, Albania appears to remain outside the direct impact for now. Key operators in the market report stable supplies and the continuation of normal daily operations, reflecting a contrast with concerns emerging in some other European regions.

“Monitor” sent official inquiries to two of the main low-cost airlines operating in the country, Wizz Air and Ryanair, as well as to Tirana International Airport, regarding their plans amid the fuel crisis.

Response from Wizz Air

“Wizz Air is well positioned to manage the current fuel market situation.

The airline has secured (hedging forward agreements to purchase fuel at a fixed price today for use in the coming months) around 70% of its fuel needs for the next six months and about 60% through March 2027. This provides strong cost predictability and limits exposure to short-term price fluctuations.

Additionally, our modern and fuel-efficient fleet 75% of which belongs to the A320neo family reduces fuel consumption by around 20%, further supporting cost control.

At this stage, we are not facing structural fuel supply issues across our European network. Any disruptions reported recently at certain airports have been isolated and short-term, with no impact on Wizz Air’s operations, flight frequencies, or schedules.

Looking ahead to the summer season, Wizz Air continues to operate according to plan and expand its network. While the aviation industry as a whole continues to monitor fuel price developments, our current position allows us to maintain operational stability and continue offering competitive fares to passengers.

For markets such as Albania, where low-cost travel plays a key role in connectivity and tourism, maintaining affordable and reliable air travel remains a priority.

Wizz Air continues to see strong demand in Albania and remains committed to supporting the market through continuous expansion and accessible pricing,” the company said.

Meanwhile, Ryanair had not responded by the time of publication.

Response from Tirana International Airport

The airport also confirmed that operations are continuing without interruption, emphasizing that the supply chain remains functional despite global developments.

“TIA is not affected by the aviation fuel crisis, and flights continue as normal. Tirana International Airport continues airline operations without being impacted by the global jet fuel shortage. Departures from TIA will proceed normally to scheduled destinations.

Our official jet fuel supply partner, Air BP, has ensured sufficient reserves for TIA, supported by the rapid growth in passenger traffic in recent years.

Supplies are guaranteed and the situation remains stable, allowing us to operate without concern.”

Meanwhile, in international markets, analysts warn that any further escalation in supply chain tensions or a sudden surge in demand during the summer could renew pressure on ticket prices and airline profitability.
