Korça, a city known for its craftsmanship and rich cultural heritage, has this time attracted three foreign girls who are learning the art of carpet weaving — an ancient craft of great cultural value.

One of them is Burxhu, who has a special connection to the city, as her mother is from Korçë and her father is Turkish. She lives in Tirana and considers this experience not only a passion but also a return to her family roots.

“My name is Burxhu, I’ve been living in Albania for 8 years. My mother is from Korçë and my father is from Turkey. I really wanted to learn something new, and this is the first time I’m working with carpet weaving. I love traditions and I want to make the most of it for a bigger project,” she says.

Alongside her, two other girls from Taiwan and England have also chosen to learn this traditional craft, fascinated by the beauty of Albanian traditions. They express their love for the motifs, colors, and symbolism of Albanian carpets.

“I always asked myself if I could make a beautiful carpet when I first saw one at the Old Bazaar in Korçë. I’m so happy to be learning now, and I want to take the carpet back with me to Taiwan,” one of them shares.

Meanwhile, the girl from England says: “I saw this opportunity online and I’ve always wanted to learn carpet weaving. I came from Tirana to Korçë to learn, and I want to preserve this tradition.”

This initiative was launched by a local enterprise in Korçë, where young women meet every week to learn the art of carpet weaving at the city’s Youth Center. In this setting, the ancient craft of the loom intertwines with youthful energy and the new generation.
