Greece is being “drowned” by African dust

A massive cloud of Saharan dust has moved toward Greece, and “red rain” warnings have been issued across the country. The enormous dust mass is expected to cover southern Greece and Crete, creating a dense red haze and muddy rain.

Meteorologists explained that an isolated high-altitude depression is drawing large amounts of sand from the regions of Libya and Egypt. The weather agency has warned that the microscopic particles will affect air quality, while the sky will take on an orange hue.

If the dust mixes with rain, it will result in “bloody” muddy rainfall that will stain everything it touches.

The warning is in effect for two days, Wednesday and Thursday.

The rains accompanying this phenomenon are expected to trigger landslides:

Wednesday: in the Ionian Islands, Western Peloponnese, Crete, and Southern Dodecanese

Thursday: in Central Greece, including Attica
