Technology is increasingly taking up space in daily life and in the learning process, and as a result, fewer and fewer children practice handwriting.

Teachers express concern that the lack of clear guidelines and the widespread use of digital devices are directly affecting the loss of this basic skill.

“In preschool education, students begin writing first with printed letters. In primary education, there is no rule whether a student should write in print or cursive, and later they tend to stick to print, as they see it as easier and less time-consuming.

Some letters are disappearing, and students have forgotten how to write capital letters by hand, such as C, E, H…,” says Luiza Kërkuti, a teacher of the Albanian language.

At a time when screens are replacing pens and notebooks, UNESCO has introduced a new official initiative to protect handwriting, which is being threatened by the widespread use of digital writing and keyboards and touchscreens. Handwriting is considered a key element in passing knowledge from generation to generation, and according to UNESCO, its value must be preserved.
