The section of the Ionian Road connecting Arta with Amfilochia will remain closed for at least three months following a major landslide in the Sykoula area. The incident caused significant damage to the infrastructure, making safe vehicle traffic impossible on this important road segment.

According to local authorities, the mass of earth and rocks that detached from the mountain slope covered a large portion of the road, while cracks and instability were observed in several spots. Due to the risk of further landslides, a full closure of the route has been imposed until stabilization works are completed. Engineers and technical teams are conducting detailed geological assessments to determine the necessary interventions, which include clearing the area, constructing retaining walls, and reinforcing the slope.

This development has caused major difficulties for local residents and intercity transport, as the Ionian Road is one of the main arteries connecting the western regions of Greece. Drivers are being redirected to alternative routes, significantly increasing travel time and traffic on other roads.

However, the situation appears more optimistic regarding the route to Ioannina. Although currently closed for safety reasons, authorities estimate that this segment could reopen for traffic within the next 20 days. Work on this section is progressing faster, as the damage is more limited and the technical interventions are considered easier to carry out.

Relevant institutions have urged citizens to remain patient and follow temporary signage, emphasizing that safety remains the absolute priority. Once the interventions are completed, the affected segment is expected to be more stable and better protected against similar natural phenomena in the future.
