“I want to die like Bekim Fehmiu”/ Today, 15 years without the famous actor Llazi Sërbo

The Albanian actor Llazi Sërbo is well known for the contribution he gave to Albanian cinematography. He was born in Korçë, on March 9, 1945. The actor will be remembered for his roles in the films The Stars of Long Nights and Operation Fire.

Throughout his life, the artist played in more than 100 roles. He completed elementary and high school in Korçë and later continued his studies at the “Academy of Arts” in Tirana.

After graduating in 1969, he was appointed to the “A.Z. Çajupi” Theater of Korçë. From 1986 to 1993 he worked as an assistant director at the “New Albania” Film Studio.

On the stage of the Korçë Theater he played around 30 leading and supporting roles. He stood out in the performances The Invincibles (Major Shtok), The Accused City, The Literature Teacher (Sami), The Angels of Hell, The Threepenny Opera (Mack the Knife), etc. He created particularly striking figures in cinematography.

He began with the role of Dalan in the film The Stars of Long Nights (1972), where he portrayed the restrained hero type, and later reached high-level artistic portrayals, especially in films like Operation Fire (Kreshnik, a heroic figure), The Fall of the Idols (the Teacher), The Bride and the Siege (the German captain Edgard — his most accomplished figure, especially through self-restraint, the piercing gaze, and mastery of the investigative plan), and Nothing is Forgotten (Andi Rama).

Sërbo suffered from depression and was receiving treatment. Despite the medication, he took his own life with a hunting rifle on September 12, 2010, when he was found dead in his home in Korçë.

He died at the age of 65. Before his death, Sërbo had told a friend that he wished to die like Bekim Fehmiu, another Albanian actor who had committed suicide only three months before Llazi Sërbo’s death.

Even today, 15 years after his passing, we all remember with admiration and honor his artistic spirit.
