Albania closed the last quarter of 2025 with a positive demographic balance, but with worrying signals regarding the number of births.
According to preliminary INSTAT data, 668 more births than deaths were recorded in the country, keeping natural population growth in positive territory.
However, this was not due to an increase in births, but rather to a decline in deaths.
During the October–December 2025 period, 5,373 births were registered, 232 fewer than in the same period in 2024. Meanwhile, according to INSTAT, 4,705 deaths were recorded during the same period.
Out of the 12 regions, only 7 reported positive natural population growth, while the other 5 recorded a net population decline. Tirana once again stands out as the demographic locomotive, with 1,547 more births than deaths, carrying the main share of the country’s natural population increase. At the other end is Fier, where 120 more deaths than births were recorded, placing the region in negative balance.
The picture looks even bleaker when examining the distribution of births. Only one region recorded an increase in births compared with the end of 2024, while 11 others saw a decline.
Tirana leads with 2,589 births, while Gjirokastër closes the list with only 70 babies born during the quarter.
As for deaths, Kukës recorded the lowest number with 81, while Tirana had the highest absolute figure, 1,042 deaths, due to its population size.
The Korçë region recorded the sharpest decline in the number of deaths, with 231 fewer deaths registered.
