No damage or injuries reported; Civil Protection activates crisis unit and continues checks in coastal areas.
Southern regions of Italy were awakened by a powerful earthquake in the early hours of Tuesday, June 2, which also marks Republic Day. The seismic event occurred shortly after midnight in the Tyrrhenian Sea, near the coast of Calabria.
According to the Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.1 and was recorded at 00:12 local time. The epicenter was located offshore, about 20 kilometers from the northwestern coast of Calabria, near the town of Amantea in the province of Cosenza.
The hypocenter of the earthquake was located at a depth of approximately 250 kilometers beneath the seabed. According to INGV, such deep earthquakes are characteristic of the southern Tyrrhenian Sea and are linked to the geological process of the Ionian lithospheric plate subducting beneath Calabria.
The tremors were felt across a wide area of southern Italy, including Calabria, Naples, Basilicata, Puglia and Sicily.
Although the magnitude was considerable, the combination of an offshore epicenter and the great depth of the earthquake limited its impact on the surface. Italian Civil Protection authorities reported that no damage to property or injuries to people had been recorded.
Following the event, the National Civil Protection Department stated that its operations center remained in constant contact with local authorities to monitor the situation and carry out the necessary inspections. The department's director, Fabio Ciciliano, convened the crisis unit in Rome at 1:00 a.m.
The regional Civil Protection operations room contacted the mayors of municipalities closest to the epicenter, including Cetraro, Lamezia Terme and Amantea. According to local authorities, no damage has been detected. The mayor of Cosenza, Franz Caruso, also confirmed that the situation remains under control.
The northwestern coast of Calabria is considered one of the most closely monitored seismic areas in Italy. Inspections of infrastructure and buildings along the Tyrrhenian coastline continued throughout Tuesday morning.
