Myslim Murrizi has stated that the Democratic Party (PD) is in need of reform and a change in leadership. As a member of the party’s National Council, he emphasized that responsibility for the May 11 electoral defeat does not lie solely with Sali Berisha, and has called for an extraordinary party congress to reassess the situation and restructure DP's leadership bodies.
“The DP has stated publicly, including Berisha himself, that they’re waiting for the OSCE/ODIHR report before meeting again. But I think we’re at the limit. The last congress was in April, but there’s nothing wrong with holding an extraordinary congress to recompose the National Council and the leadership. Things need to move. Responsibility can’t fall on one individual,” said Murrizi.
According to him, the deputy chairpersons, the secretariat, and the head of the National Council should also be held accountable. He demanded clear action from the political coordinators in the districts.
“All political leaders bear responsibility, especially those who either requested or were part of the political deals while Berisha was under house arrest. If they have any moral sense, they should resign not just from their leadership roles, but even consider giving up their mandates,” he told A2 CNN.
While he doesn't call for Berisha's resignation, Murrizi opposes the so-called “Basha clause” in the party statute, which mandates the chairman’s resignation in case of election defeat. Instead, he proposes a vote of confidence from party members, referring back to the original December 1990 statute.
“I’ve been in the DP since December 8, 1990, and these clauses named after individuals, drafted under emotional conditions, Bardhi, Noka, Gjekmarkaj, Murrizi are laughable. The best model remains the statute drafted on December 12, 1990. I believe the leader should go through a vote of confidence,” Murrizi said.
Still, he made his ambitions clear, stating that if internal elections are held, he will throw his name into the race.
“If the race opens, if there are elections for party leader, I along with others will consider entering the race, because this isn’t a position to be appointed. If Berisha withdraws and doesn’t interfere in the process, he can be sure it will be a strong race with plenty of contenders. And I don’t think the party lacks good candidates for leader,” Murrizi concluded.
