On the 111th anniversary of his birth, we commemorate Vangjush Tushi, one of the icons of Korçë’s painting tradition.
Born in Korçë, he was educated at the French Lyceum of Korçë, the Academy of Fine Arts in Athens, and later in Rome. After returning to his homeland, he worked for decades as an art teacher and lecturer in Korçë and was the initiator of the opening of the Secondary School of Painting, where he also served as director.
In 1976, due to his ideological and artistic views, he was arrested and sentenced to 10 years of political imprisonment. He passed away in Ballsh prison in 1982 at the age of 68.
Vangjush Tushi left behind a rich body of work—hundreds of pieces in painting and drawing, mainly portraits and landscapes, distinguished by compositional and technical mastery.
His works are preserved in various galleries and institutions across Albania.
He was also a polyglot, a musician, and active in the cultural life of the city. For his contributions, he was honored with the titles “Honorary Citizen” of Korçë and “People’s Painter.”
