Pandeli Opingari, one of the most respected figures in Vlorë sports and a former Flamurtari player, passed away this Sunday from injuries sustained in a road accident two days earlier, while crossing the street at a pedestrian crossing in the city of Vlorë.

The incident occurred on January 2 on “Demokracia” street, where the 96-year-old was struck by an Audi driven by a 22-year-old with the initials O.A.

Opingari was immediately taken to the hospital and remained in intensive care for several hours, but despite the doctors’ efforts, he did not survive.

The police have arrested the driver and initiated legal proceedings for the accident, which happened as the elderly man was crossing on foot.

The news of Pandeli Opingari’s passing, known to athletes and friends as “Professor Pompi,” has brought great sorrow to Vlorë.

He was part of Flamurtari during the 1960s–70s, worked as a physical education teacher, coach, and was a cherished figure in the sports and local community.

A life devoted to sports and the education of young generations ended tragically due to a road accident.
