A new outbreak of small ruminant plague has been detected in the Korçë region. After spreading in the village of Shuec in Devoll, the disease has now been identified in the village of Shkozë, which falls under the jurisdiction of Maliq municipality.
In this outbreak, around 190 sheep have been culled, as they were considered to be affected by the disease. According to preliminary data, there is a risk that up to 500 more small ruminants could be infected.
Although the culling intervention has been described as drastic and with no apparent prospect of compensation, the affected farmers, both in Shkozë and Shuec, express deep despair. They feel abandoned in the face of a situation where they are losing their only means of livelihood and seriously risk the economic survival of their families.
