A dramatic event shook the town of Përmet, where a 26-year-old woman, Lediana A., was seriously endangered after being bitten by a venomous snake. Initially, Lediana was rushed to Përmet Hospital for first aid, but the critical lack of antivenom forced doctors and her family to transfer her immediately to the Regional Hospital of Gjirokastër.

The problems did not stop there. The vital medication was also unavailable in Gjirokastër, so the patient was urgently sent to the Trauma Hospital in Tirana.

Only in the capital did Lediana receive the proper treatment with antivenom, avoiding not only the loss of her life but also the amputation of her left leg, as the poisoning had started to spread up to her thigh.

This incident highlights a serious and recurring problem: the shortage of essential medicines in the country’s regional hospitals, which puts citizens at risk and forces them to travel long distances for treatment.

This situation is alarming and requires immediate action from health authorities to prevent similar tragedies.

Lediana’s family demands accountability and measures to ensure the availability of antivenom in all hospitals, as any delay in treatment can be fatal.

This case should serve as a wake-up call for the Albanian healthcare system, which must no longer allow lives to be lost due to such shortages.
