The recent declassification of several secret CIA documents provides a more realistic picture of Enver Hoxha.
According to the CIA documents, when Hoxha was a teacher at the Korçë Lyceum, he had a girlfriend, one of the most beautiful girls of that time, named Tanca Mishu.
The documents also note that Hoxha did not abstain from women even during the war.
The first information was obtained by the CIA in Greece from a defected Albanian, Aleko Bimbli, a citizen of Korçë and a former student when Hoxha taught at the Korçë Lyceum.
In his role as a press attaché at the Albanian Legation in Belgrade, Bimbli had accompanied Hoxha during his visit to Yugoslavia. The circumstances of Aleko’s defection are unknown.
The earliest CIA information about Hoxha’s sexual life is dated May 21, 1951. It is part of a 24-page dossier. The earliest data is from 1943, while the latest is from 1957. In this dossier, Hoxha is identified as “THE SUBJECT.” On page 12, it explicitly states: “Liri Kondi and Milka Frashëri are the influential girlfriends of the Subject.”
Aleko describes Enver Hoxha and Mehmet Shehu as follows: “Occasionally in the free press, there is the judgment that Enver is not a man with pulse, that he has an extremely soft character and is influenced by others. I do not agree with this opinion.
He has pulse, and he has character. Without any doubt, Mehmet is wilder, his temperament more pronounced. These are necessary qualities for a leader in a totalitarian regime. However, it should not be forgotten that alongside these merits, Mehmet also has great flaws; he is capricious, impulsive, and always needs someone to restrain him.
All the more because his desires are directed at realities, he is guided by personal passions, and he is carried away by momentary successes. Unlike Mehmet, Enver is more political, more diplomatic, and more realistic.”
According to the documents published by Panorama, Bimbli states that in Greece he heard rumors that Hoxha was also homosexual, but he remained neutral about these claims: “Here in Greece, I heard that he is also a pederast. As long as I was in Albania, I had never heard anything of the sort.
It is even claimed that H. Samarxhiu, a leather trader who emigrated to Greece in 1943 and is now financially well-off in Thessaloniki, had him as his lover. Naturally, personally, I cannot refute or confirm this accusation,” he writes.
