A large fire broke out in the early hours of the morning at the well-known VIOLANTA biscuit factory in Trikala, Greece, causing extensive material damage.

According to the Fire Department, the flames started shortly before 4:00 a.m., engulfing a large part of the factory, and the fire remains intense.

Eyewitnesses reported to trikalaola.gr that the fire was preceded by a powerful explosion, loud enough to be heard across the city of Trikala and surrounding villages, breaking windows in some homes.

Part of the factory has collapsed, and according to workers on the scene, there were no LPG tanks, which currently rules out one of the most common causes of industrial explosions.

Greek media report that three women have died, while two other women are missing.

At the time of the incident, 11 people were present in the area. Five of them have not yet been identified, while six were taken to the hospital for first aid.

According to official sources, all are in good health and out of life-threatening danger.

EMAK units, including reinforcements from Lamia, are on site.

The intervention of DAEE (Directorate for Combating Arson Crimes) has also been ordered to investigate the causes of the explosion and fire.

For safety reasons, the Karditsa road has been closed, and vehicle traffic is being diverted through the village of Agia Kyriaki to facilitate emergency teams’ work and ensure the safety of residents.
