One of the most important monuments of Albania’s cultural heritage is the Church of “St. George” in Shipskë, Korçë County.
Located at the entrance of the village, about 25 km from Korça and 5 km from Voskopoja, the church is classified as a Category I Cultural Monument. Built in the 17th century, it belongs to the group of Voskopoja basilicas and features a three-nave layout with a roof system composed of vaults, domes, and arches.
Specialists from the Regional Directorate of Cultural Heritage in Korça (DRTK Korçë) are focusing special attention on this church, which is currently undergoing roof restoration. The RDCH Korçë team is carrying out these works to ensure the preservation and long-term maintenance of the monument. At the same time, the surrounding area is being cleaned, as the church is a popular site for visitors.
The Church of St. George was painted in the 17th century. A room on the southern side is dedicated to St. Naum, a later addition.
St. George is one of the most celebrated saints in Albania, with numerous churches across the country dedicated to him. According to legend, St. George was born in Cappadocia, Asia, in the second half of the 3rd century (around 275–385 AD) and was martyred in Palestine.
His figure is associated with the famous legend of his victory over the dragon, symbolizing the triumph of Christianity over the inhuman violence of evil. In iconography, he is always depicted as a courageous knight confronting and defeating the dragon.
