The Church of the Resurrection (Kisha e Ristozit), located in the village of Mborje, southeast of Korça, is a fascinating example of Byzantine architecture. Likely built in the 1300s, it is renowned for its frescoes, which date to 1390.
The church was constructed under the lordship of Berat, under the Muzaka family, with contributions from Bishop Nimfoni. While some historical accounts suggest an earlier construction date in the late 9th century, the church’s architectural features clearly align with the late Byzantine style, making the 1300s date more credible.
In 2015, the church underwent restoration to prevent the collapse of its dome, ensuring its survival for future generations. The Church of the Resurrection is a significant cultural and historical landmark, offering a unique glimpse into the region’s rich Byzantine heritage.
For those visiting Korça district, it is definitely worth exploring this hidden gem at the foot of Mount Morova.
