An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.4 on the Richter scale struck our country at 5 a.m. this Tuesday. The epicenter was in the village of Nikël in Kruja, but the tremors were felt in Tirana, Durrës, and surrounding areas.
Seismologists from the Institute of Geosciences say that the warning signs for this earthquake had appeared since the beginning of the month.
“It had a magnitude of 4.4 on the Richter scale, located 7 km northwest of Kamza, near the capital. Based on current assessments, we have seen that activity in this area started on June 6 and there have been a total of 27 foreshocks. It is still under analysis whether today’s tremor was the main shock,” said seismologist Damiano Koxhaj.
Although Albania is categorized as a moderate to high seismic risk zone, this event was particularly notable for the capital due to its proximity to Tirana and its shallow depth.
“We regularly have small seismic activities across the territory. This is a common phenomenon for our country, but for the capital, it is a significant event due to the close distance, which makes it somewhat unique.”
Seismologists emphasize there is no reason to panic, as aftershocks are still being recorded.
“The fact that we continue to have aftershocks, based on their frequency and magnitude, is so far a positive indicator that the situation may be stabilizing.”
According to on-site data, Tuesday’s tremor did not cause any material damage.
