The North Atlantic is entering an active phase with increased dynamics, which, according to forecasts, will bring unstable weather and heavy rainfall over Europe at the end of October and the beginning of November, meteorologists from Severe Weather Europe warn.
A warmer-than-average sea is fueling the development of frontal systems with more moisture, meaning frequent rains and an increased risk of flooding are expected. A typical autumn pattern is forming over the North Atlantic and Western Europe, where deep atmospheric troughs develop, bringing humidity and warmth across the continent.
“Bomb cyclone” and strong winds
A “bomb cyclone” is forming that could bring winds of up to 130 km/h over the Atlantic and the Bay of Biscay, with dangerous waves and strong currents along the coasts of France, Ireland, and Scotland. Additional instability is being caused by the weakened Hurricane Melissa, which is now contributing to the dynamics of the Atlantic system. Meteorologists expect the unstable pattern to continue into early November, with possible periods of heavy rain and local flooding.
Record-warm seas and consequences
Due to the warm summer and global warming, the seas around Europe are significantly warmer than average. Temperatures of 22–23°C have been recorded in the central-western Mediterranean and around the Azores, while values between 10 and 15°C have been noted in Western Europe and in the North and Baltic Seas.
The increased temperatures, especially around Scandinavia and the Baltic Sea, may encourage the development of winter fronts and storms and could bring heavier rain or snow later this year.
More humid air and a higher risk of flooding
Warmer seas increase moisture in the atmosphere, which favors the development of cyclones and storms. The more humid air feeds the frontal systems coming from the Atlantic, bringing heavy rainfall and potential flash floods.
Meteorologists warn that due to the exceptionally warm seas, the beginning of November will be marked by frequent storms, strong winds, and powerful cyclones over much of Europe.
