The new order from the Ministry of Education banning the use of cell phones not only during lessons but also while on school premises remains largely theoretical, as an observation by Top Channel shows that students find it difficult to disconnect from their technological devices.
“Not everyone will obey. The phone is part of everyday life, you can’t do much about it…,” says a high school senior.
Not all students follow the rules. During long breaks, in the schoolyard or even in the hallways, teenagers are seen with phones in their hands, even though it is not allowed. Students admit that there are exceptions even during lessons.
“I don’t use mine, but during the 5-minute breaks, teachers give us our phones… we need to check the time. For me, girls break the rule more, they make videos for TikTok.”
Students also use tricks to manipulate the teaching staff.
“Usually, they hand in two phones—one turned off to give to the teacher.”
Footage from school to school in the capital shows that high school students are the most disobedient, but even in 9-year schools, students with phones are visible among the majority whose phones have been locked in classroom drawers. Here, parents demand equality for all.
