The Polish-origin truck driver involved in the collision with the van carrying PAOK fans in Romania said he was shocked by yesterday’s accident, which claimed seven lives.

“I’ve been driving a truck for 34 years and I’ve never seen anything like this in my life. I’ve driven over 1,000,000 kilometers, and this is the first time I’ve encountered a situation like this,” he told Romania’s Libertatea, describing what happened in just a few seconds on the DN6 highway, which Romanians call the “road of death,” according to Greek media.

Local reports indicate that yesterday’s accident is the worst to occur in Timiș County in at least 20 years. The van driver is suspected of maneuvering to see when it was safe to overtake, according to an eyewitness. During the attempt, he realized he couldn’t complete the overtaking maneuver and tried to return to his lane. “At the moment he avoided the truck on his right, he collided with the red truck,” said the eyewitness, who also called 112. The witness added that after the crash, he saw one of the survivors walking out of the vehicle on foot.

The tragic accident occurred on Tuesday in Timișoara, Romania, where seven PAOK Thessaloniki fans lost their lives, including one Albanian, while three others were injured.
