Three minor children in Durrës were taken into care by Social Services in recent days after they were found alone at home by a neighbor, raising suspicions of abandonment. According to their mother, Blerina, the situation was not abandonment, but a consequence of economic hardship and her daily struggle to make ends meet.

“I have three children, aged 5, 10 and 12. I have been divorced for 5 years and I work as a bar waitress. I leave all three children together when I go to work because I earn 400,000 lekë a month and pay 300,000 lekë in rent. I can’t stay with them all the time, but I have never abandoned them,” Blerina told News24.

She accuses her former mother-in-law of entering her home without permission and influencing the children to speak badly about her, placing her in a difficult legal situation. “This is a trap. I don’t understand how someone can enter my home without permission and report me to the police,” she says.

Blerina also explains that her second son has suffered from epilepsy and has spent a long time in hospitals receiving treatment. She adds that the children’s father was imprisoned in Italy for five years and is now only able to contribute 180,000 old lekë per month for their support.

“I will not leave my children in an orphanage, I will protect them as a mother,” Blerina says, as court proceedings are expected to begin following the complaint filed by her former mother-in-law.

The mother of the three children told journalist Klodiana Haxhiaj: “I have three children, 5, 10 and 12 years old. I have been divorced for 5 years and I work as a bar waitress. I leave all three children together when I go to work because I earn 400,000 lekë a month and pay 300,000 lekë in rent. I can’t stay with them all the time, but I have never abandoned them. This is a trap by my former mother-in-law, who reported me for abandoning the children.

I don’t understand how someone can enter my home without permission and report me to the police. My second son suffered from epilepsy and I spent a long time in hospitals for his treatment; now he is better. The children’s father was in prison in Italy for 5 years and now can only give 180,000 old lekë per month. I will never abandon my children; I am a mother and I will protect them. I will not leave them in an orphanage.”
