Pakistan has threatened to launch a nuclear strike on Israel if Benjamin Netanyahu uses nuclear weapons against Iran, according to a senior Iranian officer.

General Mohsen Rezaee, a high-ranking officer in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and member of Iran’s National Security Council, said in an interview: “Pakistan has assured us that if Israel uses a nuclear bomb on Iran, they will attack Israel with a nuclear bomb.”

Pakistan and Israel are two of the nine countries currently known to possess nuclear weapons, according to experts.

Rezaee claimed that Pakistan is committed to “standing behind Iran” and called for the Islamic world to unite against Israel.

The Daily Mail has contacted Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry for comment.

After decades of hostility and proxy wars, last week’s Israeli strike on Iran has triggered the fiercest fighting yet and raised fears of a prolonged conflict that could engulf the entire Middle East.

Israel says its strikes have targeted military and nuclear facilities and have killed many senior commanders and atomic scientists.

However, a senior US official said on Sunday that US President Donald Trump has asked Israel to back off a plan to assassinate Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Trump has urged the parties to “reach a deal,” but told reporters on Sunday that “sometimes they have to fight each other first.” (abridged)
