One person has died and nine others have been admitted to intensive care in Cosenza, Italy, due to food poisoning.

Italian media report that the victims include two 17-year-olds, two women in their 40s, and three other individuals under the age of 40, who began to feel ill after eating a sandwich with sausage and broccoli from a street vendor in Diamante, a seaside resort on the Tyrrhenian coast near Cosenza.

The deceased is a 52-year-old man from Campania who became ill near Lagonegro (Potenza) while returning to Naples after having eaten a sandwich with sausage and turnip greens in Diamante (Cosenza).

His family called for help, but he died shortly before reaching the hospital. His body is in the hospital morgue, awaiting an autopsy.

The Provincial Health Authority of Cosenza immediately launched an epidemiological investigation, taking food samples from the food truck in Diamante where the food was purchased.

Meanwhile, other suspected cases have been reported from the same geographical area, showing symptoms similar to those of the hospitalized patients.

“We have no evidence to suggest that the poisoning was caused by a businessman operating in the Diamante area, who has so far been identified as such only based on patient statements,” said the mayor of Diamante, Achille Ordine, commenting on the hospitalizations.

“We are waiting for the test results conducted by the local health authority. Inspections are ongoing,” he emphasized.

Meanwhile, the mayor expresses his solidarity and closeness to the families of the patients, saying these are anxious hours for them.

“We have not taken any action yet, but we have asked the State Police to inform us immediately of the results of the ongoing investigations so that we can take any necessary measures.”
