A hotel in the historic center of Istanbul was evacuated after three members of a tourist family died from pesticide poisoning. The four family members, Turkish citizens living in Germany who were vacationing in Istanbul, fell ill after eating well-known street food in the tourist area of Ortakoy on the European side of the Bosphorus. They were taken to the hospital, but the two children, ages 3 and 6, died on Thursday, and the mother died on Friday, the Ministry of Justice said.
Foreign media reported food poisoning, raising suspicions about the food the family may have eaten. Some outlets even suggested the poisoning might have come from mussels bought from a street vendor and stuffed potatoes. The restaurant where the family had dinner has been closed.
However, two other tourists staying in the same hotel whose names have not been made public were hospitalized today after experiencing nausea and vomiting. Investigators discovered that a room on the hotel’s ground floor had recently been sprayed with pesticides, the newspaper Hürriyet reported on Monday.
Police arrested a hotel employee and two pest-control workers, bringing the total number of arrests in the case to seven, according to Hürriyet. Four individuals had already been detained earlier in connection with the suspected poisoning. All guests were relocated to other hotels, authorities said, without specifying the number of people affected.
