The list of the 50 highest-paid athletes in the world for 2026 shows that earnings in professional sports have reached record levels, generating around $4.1 billion over the last 12 months. The figure is slightly lower than the 2025 record, when the total reached $4.2 billion, according to Forbes.

The report also shows that elite athletes continue to break individual records, with income coming not only from salaries but also from commercial contracts and sponsorships.

At the top of the list is Cristiano Ronaldo, with around $300 million in annual earnings, maintaining his position as the highest-paid athlete in the world and setting a new record in modern football. He is followed by Canelo Álvarez and Lionel Messi, while the list includes major names from football, basketball, Formula 1, golf, baseball, and tennis.

According to the data, only the top 10 athletes each earn over $100 million annually, reflecting the significant growth of commercialization in global sports.

The list also highlights Lewis Hamilton, who became the first Formula 1 driver to surpass $100 million in annual income. Meanwhile, Shohei Ohtani and Juan Soto have significantly changed the rankings in baseball, setting new financial records in the sport.

On average, the highest-paid athletes are around 30 years old, while some of them, such as Cristiano Ronaldo, LeBron James, and Lewis Hamilton, remain active even in their 40s. The United States dominates the list with the largest number of athletes, while the NBA is the league with the most representatives in the global ranking.
