The European Union is finalizing an important reform concerning driving licenses. The European Parliament is expected to vote today on the new regulation, with a majority of members likely to approve it. This is the final step before the rules are implemented by the governments of member states, which will still retain some autonomy in their national application.

The main goal of this reform is to create a common standard for driving licenses across the EU, with a strong emphasis on road safety. Each year, around 20,000 people lose their lives in road accidents in the EU an alarming figure that the new legislation aims to reduce. Italian MEP Matteo Ricci, a key figure in negotiations with member states and the European Commission, stated that through these changes, the enforcement of fines will become fairer and more uniform across the union.

One of the most debated points of the regulation is the recognition of driving license suspensions. If a driver loses their license in one EU country, they will not be able to continue driving in another member state. Data will be efficiently exchanged between authorities to ensure that decisions are respected across the European Union.

Part of the new legislative package is also the introduction of the digital driving license. The license will be accessible via smartphone, a feature considered especially convenient for young people who are used to having everything on their phones. MEP Jutta Paulus described this as a step toward modernization and alignment with technology.

Another important innovation is the introduction of a two-year probationary period for new drivers across the EU, starting from the age of 17. The aim is to raise awareness and reduce the risk of accidents within this age group.

The new regulation is expected to bring significant changes to the way driving licenses are managed in the European Union, strengthening road safety while providing citizens with a simpler, more modern, and fairer tool to move freely within the union.
