An unusual event has captured the attention of doctors and people worldwide: a healthy baby was born from an embryo frozen since 1994, making it the “oldest” baby in the world in terms of embryo preservation time before birth.
The embryo was frozen for a full 30 years before being successfully used this year in an in vitro fertilization procedure.
The baby boy was born in Ohio, USA, to Lindsey Pierce, 35, and her husband Tim Pierce, 34. The couple, who shared that their child is in perfect health, described the whole experience as something out of a science fiction movie to international media.
The newborn’s parents had tried for seven years to conceive before deciding to use an embryo created by a 62-year-old woman back in 1994 with her former husband.
According to medical scientists, this event marks a historic moment for embryo preservation technology and could significantly influence the way family planning is approached in the future. Although there have been other births from embryos frozen for long periods, this case sets a new record, surpassing previous cases of embryos stored for around 27 or 29 years.
Doctors emphasize that the long-term freezing did not seem to affect the baby’s development or health, highlighting the safety and reliability of liquid nitrogen preservation techniques.
