Albania is facing a significant increase in respiratory infections, as the Australian flu is beginning to raise concerns for health authorities. According to the Institute of Public Health (ISHP), around 12,000 cases are reported per week, although no confirmed flu cases have been recorded so far.

IPH specialist Artan Simaku explains: “We have 12,000 cases per week, but we have not confirmed flu.” However, patients are presenting at health centers with flu-like symptoms such as high fever, cough, bronchitis, and often ear infections.

Authorities warn that the Australian flu may arrive earlier this year, as is happening in neighboring countries like Italy, and emphasize that the AH1N1 and AH3N2 strains are currently circulating in Europe.

“We have vaccines against these strains, so vaccination is still recommended to prevent complications,” adds Simaku.

In addition to the flu, COVID-19 and other respiratory viruses are worsening the situation, particularly for young children under five, making timely vaccination and extra precautions essential.
